William Anastasi

Early in his career, Anastasi was best known as an heir to Duchamp: a cunning Conceptualist who ranged across disciplines. He made sculptures and sound works and was also an artistic adviser to the choreographer Merce Cunningham. Here, in work made between the early sixties and 2000, he looks like a gonzo formalist. An assemblage of cardboard hung rakishly on the wall presages the work of Richard Tuttle. Canvases with exuberant graphite, acrylic, or oil-stick markings attest to the vitality of painting – though they were made in an era when the medium was declared extinct. The best works combine Anastasi’s formal chops with his literary wit, as seen in a canvas bearing the phrase “self-pity,” which a steel frame threatens to engulf. Through Jan. 17.
